35 pixels per degree

Clarity stated by Pimax: 2880 × 2880 pixels per eye over a 110° horizontal field of view.

What 35 PPD means in the car

Pixels per degree decide whether you read the mirrors and the dash or squint at them. At 35 PPD, on paper, braking boards and the car in your mirror stop being smudges. The Meta Quest 3 lists 25 PPD, and that gap is the whole story.

The DisplayPort 1.4a link matters too: the headset gets the image as your graphics card renders it, with no Wi-Fi compression in the way. Refresh goes up to 120 Hz, and the horizontal field of view is 110°.

Before you buy

It weighs 815 g, the heaviest stated weight in our VR data, so a counterweight can help over a long stint. There's no eye tracking, which means your GPU renders all that resolution: a strong graphics card isn't optional.

Tracking is inside-out out of the box, controllers included. If you already run SteamVR base stations, Pimax sells a Lighthouse faceplate separately.

Great if you…

  • race on PC with a strong graphics card and want sharp mirrors and gauges
  • want a native DisplayPort picture, not a streamed one
  • want controllers and tracking in the box, no base stations needed

Skip it if…

  • you race on PS5: no console support
  • your graphics card is mid-range: this headset will ask a lot of it
  • weight on your face bothers you: 815 g is a lot

Better fit elsewhere?

Want it lighter, and you have base stations? The Bigscreen Beyond 2 lists 32 PPD at 107 g for €1,309: Crystal Light vs Beyond 2. Want it cheaper and easier? Crystal Light vs Quest 3.

Want even more clarity? The Pimax Crystal Super (QLED) lists 57 PPD for €1,750.80. All of them are ranked in the best VR headsets for sim racing.

The verdict

If you race on PC and your graphics card can feed it, the Crystal Light is where VR stops being a compromise on clarity, without jumping to Crystal Super money.
